Understanding Tip Sharing Rules

Tip Sharing Rules enable the distribution of a percentage of tips from one job code to another. This is most effective for rewarding job codes that assist a job code that generates sales with tips.

For example:

  • A rule might distribute 3% of credit card tips and/or gift card tips and gratuity service charges from Servers to Cooks.

  • A rule might distribute tips equivalent to 1% of drink sales from bartenders to barracks.

To set up a Tip Sharing Rule, navigate to the "Tip Distribution" page on the left-hand tab in your dashboard (A). Once on the Tip Sharing Tab (B), hit the “Create” blue button on the right (C) and follow the prompts.

You can set everything from the schedule, the percentage shared, which job codes the tips will be collected from, and who they will be distributed to.

By default, you have access to Tip-Based and Sales-Based rules and Daily, Hourly, Half-Hourly, and Time of Sale distribution frequencies. If you need cash rules, weekly distribution frequency (not available for accounts with a semi-monthly pay period), or a unique distribution need, reach out to support for direct assistance.

In TipHaus, Tip Sharing Rules happen before Tip Pools. If an employee is routed tips through a tip-sharing rule, those tips are theirs to keep and will not subsequently be routed into a tip pool.
